4(Lesser Cuckoo4)_f0374041_13180426.jpg

Princess Shikishi left everything to him. Her arm was marked with ink in order to check the speed of the swelling. A cold wet cloth was put on her brow. Her hot and dry lips were moistened with his liquid medicine. She did not see but felt his treatments. Some painful treatments were neither fearful nor unpleasant because she could feel that she was taken care of attentively. It was not the same as timid and nervous services of her court ladies. She felt his unwavering volition. She had only to leave everything to him. It was the first experience for her, the noble virgine, the third princess of the ex-Emperor Go-Shirakawa.
In the dead of night, everyone was tired and asleep and only a scaly thrush was hooting (whose voice was feared as nue, a kind of chimaera at that time). Another voice and a sigh overlapped.

“I hope this medicine will work

A simple, straight, and touching voice.
When she opened her eyes, she saw an outline of a bonze-like head in the candlelight. Is he a priest who prays for me? But there is no smell of the fire-offering.

“Are you a priest?”

“No, I am a country doctor.”

She had never seen the people other than courtiers, Shinto priests and Buddhist monks. One of two times she had seen the country musicians, puppet players, prostitutes, etc. who were singing and dancing in front of her father, ex-Emperor. The man was different from those people and from her father whom she had rarely seen. The man looked straightly at her. His black eyes were shining like the water of Kamo River lightened in the moonlight.

“You are in a critical condition tonight. Please do not move if possible.”

She contemplated his eyes and nodded silently.

Noh Spider(NHK Educational Television)

The man removed the spider’s hairs from her bites with something like bamboo chopsticks and poured the water that a court lady brought from Nara River. He piled several pillows and set her right arm on them. The princess’ arm that should be normally hidden in her robes, whose whiteness flashed before his eyes. But soon a red swelling climbed to her elbow, upper arm, and shoulder to change her right arm into a reddish log.

He took out some medicinal herbs from his inside pocket and applied the juice to the bites. He had always carried the herbs with him since he had seen that red spider in the forest so that he could heal immediately the villagers or children attacked by the insect. The court doctor and servants were only gazing at his treatments with their mouths open.

“ The fever will heighten. I will give her my painkiller and fever medicine. If her arm should necrose, it would be a matter of life or death.”
“ Tomorrow she is scheduled to go back to Nonomiya and finish the festival
“ Impossible! She MUST rest quietly here at least ten days. May it please your honour, I have to order the room to be cleared so as to avoid even a slight shock to her body. ”
His spirit made all of them hold their tongues.

2(Lesser Cuckoo2)_f0374041_13201400.jpg

。。 Late-autumnal dew's period has begun today.

Today the late-autumnal dew's period has begun in Japanese calendar(photo in 2016)

Princess Shikishi was being in a hazy state. What is happening? She liked putting up at Koudate once a year, on Kamo Festival night. This residence for one night in Kamo forest, with the lower floor near to the ground, with thinner walls, conducts the feel of the forest in the air. The voices of the trees, the chorus of frogs, a silly song of a sleeping bird

At the break of dawn, Shikishi was awake alone and staring at a corner of the room. The spider that she had never seen was weaving its fantastic web. In the only spot of dim light, from the small dark red body, silver thread is extended and drawing a concentric circle regularly and elaborately. Suddenly cried a lesser cuckoo. More loudly than usual, like a triumphal song. The princess shivered, off-balanced and thrusted her right hand into the web. A sharp pain shot through her middle finger.

Vacantly she looked at her finger, at two drops of ruby blood, and at the spider. There was no fear. She was sorry that she frightened and disturbed that small insect. But soon a more acute pain attacked her. The finger and the back of the right hand became hot like a fire. And yet she felt a shiver run down her spine.
A court lady, a light sleeper got up, found her mistress’ swollen hand and screamed. A guard cried. From a distance someone’s footsteps are approaching. The court doctor’s? But can that elderly doctor run so fast? While losing consciousness, she heard a quarrel and felt the wrist held. A stranger’s voice.

“ These are a Chinese venomous spider's bites ! I have seen it in this forest several days ago. May it please your honour, this is beyond the control of the court doctor. Leave it to me, please.”

Hototogisu Lesser cuckoo. Symbol of both the life (morning, summer, etc.) and death. Its characteristic note is expressed in onomatopoeia “hototogisu” (in the Tempyo period) , “Tokkyokyokakyoku” (since the Meiji period, meaning ”(Tokyo) Patent Bureau”), etc.

Hottotogisu! A hototogisu, lesser cuckoo shrieked as if it had teared the aurora’s sky. Hottotogisu!,……hototogisu……hototgus… his shrieks little by little became muffled to fade out in the morning atmosphere. A man stopped and looked toward the east. In the green forest of Kamo, the lesser cuckoo always gets up and chirps the earliest. The bush warbler and great tit are still sleeping at dawn. The stars are glistening.

Quercus myrsinifolia, Zelkova serrata, Quercus serrata, Cinnamomum camphoravarious trees in the forest of Kamo hide a quiet and noble human activity. ― Koudate (the temporary residence for the Saiou-princess on the Kamo Festival night) ? It is still so early that everyone should be asleep. But today a murmur is conveyed through the moist air. Several human shrieks seem to be mixed there. Something extraordinary happened ? A CRY. “Saiou-sama was bitten by a spider! Call the doctor! Hurry!! ”

Portrait of Bia de' Medici and that of ITO Mansho, Kobe City Museum(April)

 Sono…soy Bia(Mamá habla Español y yo…).
Now I am in Zipangu in 2017. They say this boy was born here in Zipangu. I do not know this boy with an Elizabethan collar. If I had lived longer, I could have seen him in Firenze. But I died when I was five or six
Let me introduce my mamma and brother Giovanni (below figure). We three resemble each other, don’t we? But in fact, I am not a daughter of mamma. Babbo let a woman bear me before his marriage.

But these two portraits share the background of lapis lazuli. My facial features and expression resemble those of mamma. Even my handshape and mamma’s are almost the same! I remember…mamma whispered to the painter, Bronz, “Paint Bia similar to me. (monologue:More similar to me than a real daughter…)

Mamma came to see me while I was being sketched. Bia, good girl, are you not tired on? So excited that my cheeks turned red and I went to get up from the chair, when Mamma put one finger on her lip, Shhh…
Mamma' s portrait was painted after my death. I was looking down from the sky while she was being sketched. Gorgeous dress! Big pearls! They show clearly you how Florence was rich at that time. But her trunk is too cylindrical, isn't it? I wish Bronz… had painted her gentle face on a larger scale.
But Mamma looked satisfied, because we were alike as big and small melons. We became an eternal family in the paintings.
(note by snowdrop*Some say that Bia's portait was painted based on her death mask. If so, these two portaits might have been finished at around the same time.)

Mamma was slender and had a weak chest. As soon as she came to Heaven, I greeted her. I had lived here for twenty years and I wanted to guide her anywhere she wanted.
As she was looking for the landscapes of Spain and Naple, her native places, I led her to an orchard. Gold ornages were shining in the blue sky and smelled so good. Pomegranate trees were in bloom. Mamma looked so happy…
” The pomegranate is exotic, with the strange oriental perfume. The aroma of the East in the distance… ” Was Mama dreaming of Zipangu in the distance ?

Mamma, here is Japanese gelato! You know, our Catherine de Medici introduced the gelato from Italia to France. Her father‐in‐law, Francis I praised it "Tres bien!"
