京都には日本最古級の木造のロシア正教会があります(上図)。数年前、ここで山下りんのイコンを見ました(下図左)。山下りんは日本最初のイコン画家です。

In Kyoto there is one of Japanese oldest Russian orthodox churches, which is made of wood (upper figure). Several years ago, I have seen there an icon painted by YAMASHITA Rin (lower figure, left half)). She is the first icon painter and one of the first independent female artists in Japan.

　安政四年（1857）、茨城県に下級武士の娘として生まれたりんは、生来絵が好きで、家の反対を押し切って上京しました。初めは浮世絵などを学びましたが、明治九年（1876）、政府が工部美術学校を設立すると、その第一期生として入学しました。そこで彼女はアントーニオ・フォンタネージに師事し、ルネサンス絵画の伝統を学びました。同窓生の影響でロシア正教に改宗していたりんは、教会に派遣されてロシアのサンクトペテルブルクに留学します。

　けれども、ルネサンスやバロックの技法を学んできた彼女にとって、不変の神のイデアを写すための正教のイコンは、自らの個性を封じるものと感じられました。五年の予定の留学を三年で切り上げ、明治16年（1883）に帰国したりん。その後は日本における正教会のために黙々と「イコン」を描き続け、昭和14年（1939）にその生涯を閉じました。

She was born in 1857 to a samurai family in Ibaraki Prefecture. She ran away from home to study painting in Tokyo. After learning ukiyo-e, she entered the public art school estabished by the gorvernment in 1876. She studied under Antonio Fontanesi and learned the traditional technique of Italian Renaissance and converted to Orthodox Christianity under the influence of her friend. She went to Russia in 1880 to train as an icon painter.

But the icon technique to copy God' s idea faithfully suppressed this young painter who had studied Renaissance and Baroque art. She was dissapointed and returned home in 1883. She lived as a reserved icon painter and left lots of icons for Japanese Orthodox Church.
