待降節のはじまり（Premier dimanche de l'Avent）

千里山基督教会 Senriyama Christ Church (Union)
まだ秋の気配は残っていますが、待降節に入りました。教会では、クリスマス・イブまでの4つの日曜のために4本の蝋燭を立て、灯す炎を毎週ひとつずつ増やしてゆきます。このアドベント・キャンドルの習慣は、日本でも楽しむ家庭が増えつつあります。
There still remains the signs of autumn, the advent has begun. One set four candles for four Sundays up to Chistmas Eve, and light one candle on the first Advent, two on the second,….This custom of Advent candle has been known better than before in Japan. Not only in a church but in a family one wait for Chrstmas while regarding the flame(s) of candle(s).

日本の礼拝堂はミッションスクールのものが少なくありません。この聖アグネス教会も、もとは平安女学院のチャペルでした。煉瓦造りのゴシック様式の建物です。壁にみえる数字は日曜礼拝でうたう聖歌の番号だそうです。
Not a few Japanese chapels belong to mission schools. The above one, a Japanese parish church of the Nippon Seikokai (Anglican-Episcopal Church in Japan) used to be a chapel of St. Agnes' University. It is built of brick in Gothic style. I found a calendar on the wall but could not read it.
待降節に教会を訪ねると、降誕の情景を表した置物に出会うことがあります。イギリスではクリブ、フランスではクレッシュ、ドイツではクリッペ、イタリアではプレゼピオと呼ばれますが、いずれも「馬槽（うまぶね）」の意味です。聖アグネス教会のクリブは正倉院の葡萄唐草文錦を背にしていました。
If you visit churches during Advent, you often find the crib (eg.) / crèche (fr) / presepio (it.) / Krippe (de), which means the stable. The crib in this church was against a screen of Nishiki in Shoso-in treasures with patterns of grape vine scrolls.
