1(White Egret Castle1)
Schloss Neuschwanstein (1992)
Swan Castle in Germany, White Egret [Heron] Castle in Japan. While Schloss Neuschwanstein is like a palace, Himeji Castle is a citadel. The beautiful white plastered walls were a construction method to protect the builiding from fire, wind and snow. The castle tower was repaired this March and its white plaster is said to be the most brilliant this autumn. Snowdrop visited the refreshed white egret and reddish cherry tree leaves.

When we approached the castle, a horse and people in historical costume greeted us. Here we are in the Age of civil wars or Edo period ! Several geometric holes in walls look like the eyes of a Jack-o'-Lantern. But they are loopholes, so from rectangular ones arrows would be shoot, from triangular or round ones guns would be fired aiming at you! Attention!

Fan-shaped slope of the stone walls is the device that prevents enemies from climbing easily. In order to build high walls in a short period, one could not choose stones, so even old stone coffins were used (bigger rectangular ones)!
The six-storied castle tower has steep stairs. But today we need not keep guard on stone throwing spots or an ambush. We can rest at intervals on chairs, command a panoramic view from the windows, and observe the beautiful and strong nail hiders (left) which reminds me of more elegant ones in Katsura Villa (right).
To tell the truth, this castle has never become a battleground. At the beginning of Edo period, people built castles in various areas for the next wars, because they could never imagine the peaceful time would continue more than two hundred years. The white helon surmounted the confusion around the Meiji Restoration or the world wars, and it has kept the original appearance for four hundred years. Meanwhile, some mysterious stories were born.
