ご主人の想い出くわへ放さざるニッパーの眼の哀しからずや

世界一せつない犬のまなざし、フォックス・テリアのニッパー…亡くなった飼い主の弟に引き取られたニッパーは、ある日、蓄音器で在りし日の主人の声を聞かされます。ニッパーの様子を描いた油絵はビクターの商標になりました。

犬は喜怒哀楽の表情が豊かです。Snowdropが子供のころ飼っていた犬、フジ（藤/富士）は繊細な性格で、こんなふうに感情を露わにしていました。チャップリンの初期の映画「犬の生活」の犬も笑っていますね！

大和文華館は、中国宋時代 (12世紀) の犬と猫の対幅を所蔵しています。奈良にいながらにして、南宋院体画の写実表現をゆっくり鑑賞できます。左は愛玩用の狆でしょうか。中国から日本に渡り、「小さい犬」がなまって「ちん」となったとか。

西洋でも愛玩用の犬が好まれました。ヴェネツィアで活躍したルネサンス画家ティツィアーノの絵では、女神のそばで眠る犬を見かけることがあります。この犬は「貞操」を表し、眠っているときは「貞操の危機」なのだそうです。そういえばダナエに降りそそぐ金の雨は、変身した好色なゼウス…ご用心！
