When I read again The Stories of Birds by NAKA Kansuke
(1885-1965), I found another saint who preached to birds like Myōe and St. Francesco (12-13th century).
It is a story of Shōtoku-taishi (574-622) who established Hōryu-ji temple and Japanese grosbeaks.

In the season of the harvest (le mois de messidor est septembre au Japon), the ears of rice, millet, millet dumpling, and barnyard millet droop abundantly, grass seeds and berries turn crimson, purple, yellow in the field. A flock of grosbeaks go out from mountains to the fields. One day Shōtoku-taishi came to them and asked to permit him to build there “Ikaruga palace (the predecessor of Hōryu-ji temple)” and to come to the palace freely because they were called “Ikaru”. Then he talked one Jātaka (). (the story of Indian king Shibi, a hawk and a dove)

Shōtoku-taishi asked the sound of their song. Grosbeaks answered, “We used to sing ‘Hitsuki hoshi’ because we like beans so much that we want to get even a box of them. After your birth, ‘Hitsugi oshi’ because you are Crown (Hitsugi) Prince. Shōtoku-taishi said, “Hi(the sun
), Tsuki(the moon), and Hoshi(stars) means three lights of the world. You had better sing Hi tsuki hoshi as before. ” After that, grosbeaks have been sometimes called San-ko-chō (Three-Lights-Bird) also.

One day Shōtoku-taishi' s queen was washing and healing sick birds with medicinal water in the palace, when a dity gray heron came last. She hesitated but cleaned it also and said, “Gray helon, do not tell others that the queen washed off your dirt. ” The gray heron shuddered and metamorphosed into a golden figure and flew away saying, “Queen, do not tell others that you washed off
Kwannon : Guanyin”.

Snowdrop tried the meditation in Kōzan-ji and Hōryū-ji temples but not sufficiently, when she found one book: Le Petit Prince parle sur ZEN par Souiku Shigematsu (2013)
How about beginning to read this book when it becomes so hot that I cannot go out?

The little prince was in the Sahara…In Story of Birds, you find the one about Joseph, son of Jacob in Genesis. It reminds me of Joseph and His Brothers by Thomas Mann.

Joseph was a dreamer. He used to talk to his brothers about his dreams, for example, where the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowed to him. Moreover, he was so loved by his father that he was envied and thrown into a hole by his brothers. A hawk found and saved him by informing a caravan.

The caravan brought Joseph to Egypt and sold him as a slave to a captain of Imperial Guard. He was loved there as if he had been their child, but the wife loved him and he was put in prison. At that time an another hawk comforted him.

The dreamer solved Pharaoh’s dreams, left prison, and became a minister. When there was Famine, refegees came from his homeland…his brothers. Joseph was torn between love and hate, when a hawk on a date palm advised him to try them to see whether they regretted their sin. Thereafter, the description is the same as Genesis. Joseph forgave his brothers and met again his father home.
