Flame by UEMURA Shoen

Although it is autumn on our calendar, it is still so hot that children want to listen to ghost stories which make them freeeeze.

Hannya mask reminds us of a legend of Dojo-ji temple: A lady loved a mountain priest, followed him so eagerly that she turned into a dragon to swim across Hidaka-gawa River, wound around the bell of Dojo-ji temple in which the priest had hidden and burned it out. But, you know, the ladies who loved someone so much that transformed themselves, do not always kill her lovers.

In Gisho-e of seven scrolls of pictorial biographies of the founders of the Kegon Sect, painted during the Kamakura period (13th cengtury) and belonged to Myōe (1173-1232), you see a beautiful lady who loved a monk Gisho, followed him and turned into a dragon to protect his voyage. Myōe himself was a handsome monk and was often loved by women, so that he cut his ear to make him ugly and concentrate on his meditation.

Princess Hashi-hime (Bridge) of Uji-gawa River transformed herself to an ogress becauseof her jealousy, but at the same time she is a genius of Uji-bashi Bridge.
In the Part three of The Tale of Genji, Uji jou-jo, a princess lives in Uji and waits for her lover’s visit. But another noble man also began to love her, the agony of dilemma between two lovers incited her to throw herself into the Uji-gawa river. At last she was saved by a monk in Yokawa and became a nun. The plot that a woman proposed by two men threw herself into a river, whose original can be seen in Manyo-shu.

In Kojiki, there is a scene where Princess Ototachibana-hime (the attendant wife of Yamato-takeru Prince) threw herself into the sea to save her husband. The wife coming from Yamato (Nara) with him disappeared in the water of a foreign land and after seven days, only her comb returned to him beyond the waves…this sadness stirred his nostalgy to their homeland, Yamato.

It is considerable that the genealogy of “woman of water” who sacrifices herself or protects her lover is older than that of “woman of fire” who is reborn in the water and kills others. (To be continued to 4-3)
