Do you remember the first exhibition you have visited? For snowdrop, it was Mary Cassatt’s. She and her classmate were brought to a museum in Nara by their mothers. This autumn, the same painter’s exhibition has been held in MoMAK. Could she meet again some of paintings she had seen in 1981? http://www.momak.go.jp/English/ (MoMAK)

The texture (matiere) of Cassatt’ s oil paintings was more rough and powerful than that in my memory. And this time, I was fascinated by her drypoint (aquatint) etchings. Their contour lines are delicate and strong like the steel. The mother’ s left hand is a little too big but holding her child tightly. The heart-warming affection between the mother and child follows the tradition since Renaissance paintings, and the exaggeration the Mannierism ones.

Cassatt was attracted by the mother and child in Ukiyo-e also. The composition of The Child's Bath is like that of Ukiyo-e, but the maternal

Black Hair by ITO Shinsui (c.1947) 『

You might be surprised that the outlines of the lady’s back are similar to each other in Bathing Woman by Cassatt and in Black Hair by Shinsui. Just like a brown-haired daughter and a black-haired granddaughter of Utamaro’s beauty!

And this Westerner wears a vertical-striped skirt. The stripes used to be a sign of the derro such as an itinerant entertainer in the West. But Cassatt’s remind us of Japanese stripes as a chic pattern.

Mother and Child by UEMURA Shoen 『

I would like to show you a mother wearing a vertical-striped kimono painted by UEMURA Shoen. Though Shoen had a son, she was so busy as a painter that she left him in her mother's care. Her Mother and Child was in fact Grandmother and Child.

Cassatt did not have her own child. And yet her lots of Mother and Child include details that represent very well the mother’s attentiveness, which the mother herself often does not notice. This painter is like the essayist in the Heian period, Sei-Shonagon (c.966-1025), who had no child and all the more depicted children with keen powers of observation.

Mother and Child by Well painted in a Lotus Sutra Booklet on a Fan (12c.)

What is charming (…) a child around two or three years old, while crawling in a hurry, it finds a small dust or something, catches it between its small fingers, and shows it to an adult. (…) a boy around eight, nine, or ten reads a book with childish voice (…)
Sei-Shonagon's Pillow Book, Chapter151, translation of snowdrop

Grandmother reading to Children by Cassatt (exhibited in 1981)(pinterest)

My grandmother (similar to Shoen) loved books and she bought a picture book of Shinsui responding to her granddaughter's request. Soon my family left the hometown where my grandmother lived, and moved to Nara, where I visited the exhibition of Mary Cassatt. Grandmother reading to Children was one of the most impressive paintings for me.

Snowdrop introduced Nukata’s poem in Ginko-hiking. Wasn’t it dangerous to sail out in the darkness in the time there was no ship of Envoy to the Sui or Tang? Soon she found a book titled Departure of Ship in the Night at a library in Aska, Nara. According to this book, Homer' s Odyssey refers to the departures of ships in the night. Both the Mediterranean and the Inland Sea Seto are the archipelagos, where one should not miss the favorable wind even in the darkness. The ancient Greek and the ancient Japan have linked at an unexpected point!

Both the wheat field and rice field are like the golden sea. Georgicon tells to the ancient Romans when and what kinds of farmworks they should do according to the motion of the moon and planets. Both in Italy and in Japan people have planted the green soybeans in order to enrich the soil. The harvest season of the green soybeans are long enough to serve as an offering not only to the 15th moon but to the 13th moon, which is a little waning and called “Bean moon” or “Chestnut moon”.

One of my piccolo works in my childhood was to pick the green soybeans from branches in my grandparents’ garden before lunch. Because the thirteenth night of a lunar month falls on October13th in 2016, snowdrop has served green-and-black-soybean salad on a Peter Rabbit bowl. The green and blacklike the assorted olives?

Emperor Tenchi lived a tumultuous life: Taika Reform of 645CE; The love with a poet Nukata-no-Okimi; Battle of Baekgang; the transfer of the capital from Asuka to Omi (Shiga prefecture), etc. One day Emperor entered into a forest alone and never returned. Only his shoes were left, where people made his mausoleum. The approach of the mausoleum was cool, wet, and deserted.

: I have taken many things by forcethe head of Soga-no-Iruka, the life of the father of my wife, Yamato-hime, the life of a young prince and poet, Arima-no-Miko, the body and soul of a beautiful poet Nukata-no-Okimi, my young brother’ s lover. Beside the head of SOGA-no-Iruka, his black shoes were lying. When he was suddenly attacked by us, the shoes slipped off. The father of my wife was the very Iruka’ s cousin and was a candidate for the successor to the throne. I had no choice but to order to attack him. The young prince and poet Arima had pretended to be mad but if he had been persuaded by my political rivalshe was destined to be put to death. The poemonly the mysterious power of the waka could inspire me. It was because Nukata was a divine poet that I robbed my brother of her. I wanted her to make waka only for me, only for my country. What if she should abuse her divine power for the love with my young brother who is not Emperor? Don't mow MY lawn!!!

After the harvest moon, it is getting a little cooler than before. Snowdrop tried seeking inspiration for tanka (ginkou-hiking) after a long interval, with a camera, a cahier, and a pencil in her rucksack. Making waka had already begun even on her way to destination.

(Where does this man go by metro, holding one set of tissue paperboxes against his chest and with a rucksack on his back?

Snowdrop got off the train at Misasagi (Mausoleum) Station and went toward a small temple famous for cotton flowers. At a crossing, she found an old-fashioned shop where tatami mats were made (nobody was there). She crossed into an one-way road, which rose from there. The temple must be on a hillside. A steep stone steps came into view. If one fell on his back there, that would be a tragedy! Beside the temple gate, one had prepared for the visitors many canes and round fans to keep away mosquitoes. You know, it was hotter than expected…it was still too hot for snowdrop, a Pisces.

The snow white flower cup is filled with the rosé wine or with the morning light?

Red cotton flowers painted by Li Di

Since snowdrop introduced the cotton roses painted by Li Di in the Song dynasty, she has wanted to take photos of double-petaled cotton roses, especially the flamboyant cotton rosemallow. The flower is white in the morning, it turns thin pink during the day, and changes to red in the evening like an intoxicate beauty. The double-petaled one is similar to Li Di' s ones.

(En mélangeant des r

(Oh no, everyone is drunk and turns red! I would not drink in the daytime, never!)

Snowdrop left the temple and went back to the station. Now let’s reveal the history of the station’ s name, Mausoleum. She questioned a woman who was out of her house, but she did not know about that and even about the temple of cotton roses. On her way to the station, she found the flowers that she had seen in her childhood near her grandmother’s house. Recently she knew that this flower has a beautiful name Tama-sudare (beaded hanging screen) in Japanese and the rain lily in English.

A mysterious episode hidden in the place name, Mausoleum, will be revealed next week.

On a winter’s day, snowdrop has tried consulting her dictionaries for the definition of “dog” (n.).
 Here are the extracts.

Dog (noun) (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English)

1 [C] an animal with four legs and a tail, often kept as a pet or trained for work, for example hunting or guarding buildings. There are many types of dog, some of which are wild.

2 [C] a male dog, FOX or WOLF compare BITCH

3 (the dogs)[pl.] (BrE, informal) GRAYHOUND racing

4 [C] (slang, especially AmE) a thing of low quality; a failure
5 [C] (slang, especially AmE) an offensive way of describing a woman who is not considered attractive

6 [C] (informal, disapproving) used, especially after an adfective, to describe a man who has done sth bad

Each article defines the dog as “a domestic animal ” and shares the negative meaning “the low quality”. While Le Petit Robert follows it as“ the charm of the woman”(4),
depreciates it as “the lack of the attractness of the woman”(5). While our Kojien gives Japanese dogs (Shiba and Akita) as the examples, OALD English dogs (Greyhound). Japanese dictionary derives the meaning “a spy” from the dog’s strong scent.

Murasaki-shikibu,which is named after the author of TheTale of Genji

I am Emperor KiritsuboPaulownia Court, the father of Hikaru-Genji. Some people call me a cocu, because my new wife, Fujitsubo committed adultery with Hikaru, her son-in-law, had a child, and the child was to be an emperor as my son. Do you think that I knew nothing?

Hikaru’ s real mother, Kiritsubo, a lady court attendant, lived in KiritsuboPaulownia Courtand was graceful like the paulownia flower. Because she had lower social status and had no backing, she suffered from the jealousy and bullying by other ladies. In the end she died young. Did she feel bitter of my excessive love? Never! I cannot forget her last waka that she gasped out, and big black pupils of her eyes that gazed at me she had took a last look.

How sad my path is going to be separated from yours, I wish I could prolong my life!

She and I often vowed eternal love like Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei! But the death separated us like the Chinise couple
Chang hen ge by Bai Juyi tells that the Emperor demanded a mage to seek for her soul. I also wanted such a mage to search for my dear’ s soul. I desired to know where her soul existed.

Yang Guifei by Shoen

The time passed and I took a new wife, Fujitsubo, who was the very image of Kiritsubo. When the young wife and the boy Hikaru stood close to each other, I felt as if Kiritsubo had returned and as if I had gotten back the lost time. Hikaru’s eyes were full of the affection to his new mother. Oh, this child also got back the lost time with his real mother.
Soon Hikaru came of age. If he had been an only child, I would have appointed him as the Crown Prince. But I had an elder son between my old wife, Empress Kokiden. I was afraid that the very ordinary elder brother and the brilliant younger brother might become estranged from each other and their discord would develop into a political dispute. I decided to make him a vassal and give family name of the Genji clan.
Though Hikaru married a legal wife, Aoi, he fell in love with various women: an older lover Lady Rokujo, a very young wife Murasaki-no-ue, a married wife Utsusemi, a common lover Moonflower, mum-like Hana-chiru-satoMy son’s behavior looked painful for me. Does he try to make up for his unsatisfied affection to his step-mother Fujitsubo since his coming of age? Furthermore, does he sing the love songs for his deceased mother Kiritsubo to many women indiscriminately and unconsciously ?

So I was not surprised when Hikaru waved his sleeves at Fujitsubo while dancing in the Fall-leaves viewing festival. I was not surprised when the baby between Fujitsubo and I, an old emperor, looked up at me with black eyes just like those of baby Hikaru. I found neither the anger nor the sadness nor the jealousy in my heart. Ah, Kiritsubo, your love and life have returned and been succeeded in this form! You had sung on your own life (desire to prolong it ). I sang to myself on your life (Because I have lived, I met your love and life again today.) (This young couple's love is your love and life.)
 And the time passed
while thinking of the future of Hikaru, keeping all the secret to myself, I departed from this life.

(in place of Emperor Kiritsubo, by snowdrop)

Surrounded by the rustling of paulownia leaves, I embrace our baby, our life.

Hikaru was exiled by his political opponents to Suma and Akashi, far from Kyoto. Like another poem of Bai Juyi. I appeared in a dream of the emperor, Hikaru’ s elder brother, and forced him to call back Hikaru to Kyoto.
And at last, the time has come for the son of Hikaru and Fujitsubo to ascend the throne as my own son. I have waited for this time for a long time above the clouds. While Hikaru became a vassal, his son became an emperor. My wish has come true. Kiritsubo’ s tears have been rewarded. And yet why does Hikaru look melancholic? Why are Fujitsubo dressed in gray as a nun? I am neither angry nor sad

Hikaru-Genji was to embrace an illegitimate child as his own son.

According to an essay of Kushida Magoichi, an American ornithologist, Audubon went through a similar experience.
“One episode was interesting for me (Magoichi) where an odd man visited Audubon at his hut in the woods. At the night when he put the man up, he heard a big noise. Entering the room, he found the guest swinging the host’s precious violin so as to knock down a bat which had flied in.” (Works of Kushida Magoici, vol.

In the West, a devil has often the bat’ s wings. But in the East, the bat brings luck because this creature is called “biānfú” in Chinese, whose pronunciation resembles “piānfú” (the luck comes especially to someone). In Japan, it is found in the design of a family crest or of a cigarette brand (Golden Bat, Magoichi' s favorite).

At the end of the summer, a bottle of handmade blueberry jam was delivered to my house. A familiar person had picked lots of blueberries under the brazing sun in Nara and made the fresh jam in his house. His jam has increased our appetite. We use it for every meal and dessert (à la mode d' Ile flottant?). This summer, I have learnt to dilute wine with soda (like the Greek with water!) , so I tried Blueberry and Soda! Mmmmm
…yummy (tastes good)! We will treat ourselves to have roast beef with blueberry sauce at dinner with Scandinavian tableware. The flame in a lotus-shaped candleholder flutters in an autumnal breezewhich reminds me of my trip about twenty years ago with my friend, who presented me later the above plate.

Interior in snowdrop's memory

Leaving a main road (where only one car passed during one hour) to enter a path, I found a cattle farm and a lake with several yachts. A cow is observing me from far away. Is it because of my red raincoat to make me warm? The buzzing of flies and mosquitoes. When I was enjoying the cool breeze under a birch tree, someone called me, “Kaufi!” “Cow field [kάʊ fi:ld]?“Coffee [kάfi] and ice cream!”― She invites me to FIKA!

A woman of my generation served me white rectangular ice cream on the terrace. It was partly because the electric fence for cattle was dangerous for me that she called me out. According to her, it was rare that a Japanese traveler not only passes but stays in her village. Her parents and a boy in neighborhood came out to the terrace. He held a fly swatter like Japanese one. In Finland, a country of the woods and lakes, there are much more flies and mosquitoes than other Scandinavian countries.
I glanced at the living room with gold and white furniture around the 19th century like the ones I had seen in several museums. That house was not a summer house but their principal residence. I wanted to take a photo of the interior, but I could not ask that. What a shame!(…)

When my friend and I hurried to the pier of our hotel at 10 p.m., the woman and her sister had been waiting for us in their boat. Surrounded by a rosy dusk, the old wooden boat glided over the lake. Through reed beds, the boat reached a small island, at which we landed while taking the sisters’ hands. There stood their private log house. They picked some blueberries from a bush and handed them to us.

Their boy friends were waiting for us in a log house consisting of two rooms, where landscape paintings and stagheads were on the wall and birchwood was burning in a fireplace. They handed us skewered makkarasausageto roast in the fireplace. A candle illuminated the table. The watermelon in the salad was imported from Southern Europe. We drank Sprite and orange soda.

When my friend sang a Finnish children’ s song in Japanese, they could hum but they had forgotten the original words.

When we left the log house around one o’ clock, a dim light was still clinging to a corner of the sky. We got on the boat. The venus and several other stars were shining. A haze was setting in because the water was warmer than the air. I tried putting my hand in the warm water. The silhouettes of low islands were floating in the haze. (…)We called it a day and went to bed in our hotel at 2 a.m., already the following day!

A beauty is peeking out through merry ladies. She is Amaterasu, a Japanese goddess who is coming out of the heavenly rock cave. The theme of Japan’s synchronized swimming team was AMATERASU, the goddess of the sun in Japanese myths. The depressed solar goddess had been withdrawing to the cave while leaving the world in the darkness, but she was lured out by other gods' cheerful dance and music. Her return brought the sunlight to the world again. Japanese team expressed the spirits of Amaterasu and other gods powerfully and captured the bronze medal again.

Have you seen the bird named hoopoe? He is sometimes seen in Shosoin Treasures. His Japanese name Yatsu-gashira (<kashira) derives from the shape of his crest like eight heads. This bird is a migratory that travels from Africa to Europe, sometimes to Central Asia, China and Japan. It is a strong bird who flies in the sky like an arrow.

One hoopoe has flown to my house. The bird is engraved on a blue ivory ball with bachiru decoration by MORITA Kura. On the reverse, another bird is flying but with no crest. She is a Japanese duck. The hoopoe that had traveled from Africa to Japan via Europe or Central Asia, met the duck in Nara. How about listening to their conversation? Oh, it resembles a chapter in Kojiki, Records of Ancient Matters.

He has a blue voice that is suitable for the paean.(snowdrop: Kume was a tribe of the royal army and military music. Blue signified the victory according to Mr. Morita.)

The painter left Paris to London. England, the country where John Ruskin had lived until January 1900. The art critique that the painter respected in advance, whom this Japanese must have met if he had been still alive. But the paintings of Turner, with whom Ruskin had a relationship, welcomed the Japanese painter any time in Tate and in National Gallary of Art. The painting is more eloquent than the word for the painter. Turner and Constable show us the poems without the word. They remind us of the Chinese poem in the literati painting.

In this Orient painter who took a profound look at the Western paintings, something began to move. On November the third in 1900, he signed on his postcard (Phoenix lives here)”. In his original nom de plume ”(Phoenix lives here)”, a Chinese character 西West has entered. It was the moment when the Japanese-style painter who at last knew Western paintings, gave alone his second cry as a painter.

Woman in blue reading a letter by Vermeer (c.1663)

July is "the month of the letter", when people write their wishes on the strips of fancy paper or confide their feelings in their letters.
This month reminds me of an exhibition in 2011 whose topic were three pictures concerning the letter painted by Johannes Vermeer (fig.1,2,3). When I saw two of them in the same place, I could enjoy imagining that the girl writing a letter and the woman reading a letter are the same person. The blue chair with lion-shaped decoration is one of the properties that the painter often used. Suppose that this chair were one of her bridal furniture? Listen, a woman in blue has begun to murmur.

He has not yet returned to me from his voyage. Every day I see a big map on the wall and look for the name of the port towns he mentioned in his letters. I used to like writing a love letter. Even when I did not meet him, I used to dress up with a fur-trimmed yellow cape and ribbonsthe pearl pierces and necklace were the props of Venus for me.

My pearls must have enchanted the seaman! Now I live in his house. But he is not here. I seek for him in his letters from overseas. I pray for his safety every day. I do not shave my forehead any more. My hair has been thinning, and only two ringlets about my ears are the remains of the abundant hair in my youth. My hands have become sinewy. I do not need my yellow cape any more. I am content with this simple ultramarine dress with salty scent. On my pearls, several books are piled up. Yes, I learned to read the book in order to make up for his absence, in order to forget that magic of Venus.

Lady writing a letter with her maid by Vermeer(c.1670)

Annunciation by Jan van Eyck(15c.)

Here is one more painting concerning the letterwhose characters are a lady writing a letter and her maid. Another letter scattered on the floor and a painting on the wall representing Moses saved by Pharaoh's daughterjust like one scene in a drama. Does this lady also intend to save her love by forgiving her lover who sent that letter on the floor? The maid is seeing the stained glass window through which the peaceful light streams in as if they were in a church.
This mysterious painting with both sacred and profane elements was painted a little later than the above two, on a little larger scale. Did the painter try to create a more eloquent painting than before? Did his customers come to prefer such a story characteristic? And was the painter waiting for an opportunity to advance again into the highest-ranked genre: the historical (mythological) painting?
Personally I would like to imagine this painting is a kind of parody of the Northern Renaissance paintings. The illuminant window on the left has often been seen since the works such as Jan van Eyck's. It is true that many contemporary painters of Vermeer adopted this composition, but it seems to me that the peacefullness of Vermeer's light resembles that of Northern Renaissance paintings.
For example, I dare to liken this room to a chapel and these two women to the Virgin Mary and Angel Gabriel. Far-fetched? But Vermeer painted a stained glass and a wine glass in other two paintings. It is said that the figure in the window glass symbolizes the moderation (in drinking). But what if this wine implys also an element
of the Sacrament? Did the Dutch bourgeoisie that became rich (and sometimes favoured Vermeer's paintings) learn to enjoy his "mitate-e" * like Edo people? Too much imagination?
